THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CEREMONY AND RITUAL

When we are talking about ceremonies, the term rituals often comes up as well. Many of us think a ritual and a ceremony mainly describe the same, but they don’t. There is a small but subtle difference between both of them. In the following blog post we will explain to you the meanings of each term. After that you may also understand why we talk about a cacao ceremony and not a ritual.

First of all let’s clarify the term “ritual”

Broadly spoken, a ritual is an action which will be repeated over and over in a consistent way. Unlike habits we all have integrated in our daily lives, rituals are meant to have a positive impact for you and your inner peace of mind. They bring inner peace, support and stability. In order we can center ourselves and gain strength for our everyday life.

For closer understanding here’s a little example:

If you get up every morning and put on your bathrobe first, brush your teeth and then do your hair, it’s more a habit than a ritual. On the other hand, if you go sit down on the terrace with a cup of raw cacao after getting up in the morning, spend 20 minutes enjoying nature and breathe in morning air while listening to the wind and birds around you, it is a ritual. By performing rituals like this, you become more focused and rational to manage your everydays life.

your cup of cacao in the morning

ceremony or ritual?

However, a ceremony is a festive act. It follows a set order or a rite* which usually has a symbolic nature, such as a wedding or a welcoming ceremony at state receptions. It is usually performed with a certain intention to request a specific result. In many cases it is also built on one or more rituals. But even if it is repeated now and then, a ceremony will never become a ritual. Even though one and the same person repeats it.

A ceremony always stays a ceremony

While a ceremony always stays a ceremony, an everyday ritual on the other hand can transform into a ceremony. You just need to attach a larger ceremonial value to the action and celebrate your ritual as a feast. For example: If we shape our morning ritual more festive by making preparations, drumming on a pow wow in the beginning. And if we also do it for a special reason on a specific day – such as the first morning after new moon to thank nature for it’s beauty – our morning ritual becomes a ceremony.

In conclusion to all of that, you can say that rituals and ceremonies have an important healing function for each one of us but also for society. That is why it is so important to integrate them in our lives.

*A rite essentially describes a settled order of performing mostly ceremonial or religious actions. They fall into three major categories: rites of passage, communal rites and rites of personal devotion.

Supporting Balinese Farmers in COVID times

CACAMO joined a local politician event in Bali to speak up for Balinese farmers and support the farming industry by convincing the minister of the economy to increase investments for the farmers.

The FORUM KAB/KOTA KREATIF BALI (Creative Economy Bali)

It was Monday, the 7th of June when CACAMO and a bunch of farmers from West Bali were invited to the forum Bali Creative Economy, created by the government of Indonesia and Indonesia Creative Cities Network (ICCN). Additionally, important politicians like the minister of Economy for small business and the mayor of West Bali were invited to talk together about how Balinese farmers can be supported and boost the economy with farming, in this COVID-19 crisis, where still min 70% of the economy is on hold because that’s usually come from the tourism that is still missing out to closed borders.

CACAMO was invited as the only foreign guest

The community leaders of our Bali Cacao collective called Supi in the morning full of excitement that they got invited and should present themselves in front of the ministers to actually pitch for more investment money.

At the same time, they asked me to join as a testimonial and client of them to show and demonstrate that they could achieve way more with exports if they would have the right machines, equipment and licence.

An evening with the politicians of Bali

While we were waiting for more than 1 hour for the 10 politicians, who have been on a field visit around Bali before, Supi from CACAMO had the chance to get an overview of the situation of many farmers in Bali. From seaweed farmers, Coconut farmers, fruit and vegetable farmers, cacao farmers and many more. They all started during COVID-19 to work as farmers again, where they actually come from. When tourism stopped, so their world stopped, their work stopped. And after a while, they realized they need to find outer solutions. That’s what the government want to support as well, and this forum was created to come together and find the most common sense for both sides.

We got invited

Cacamo as important export partner

To tell our experience and needs for Bali Cacao

CACAMO speaks about the good collaboration with the Cacao farmers

While all farmers had to speak in front of the 10 ministers and politicians, what they are doing and where they are struggling the most, Supi from CACAMO had to speak from the other side as a client, how we collaborate with the farmers, our experience with export and the Balinese collaboration and our future expectations.

More support for Balinese farmers

In the end, the ministers signed a contract to agree on more investment into the farmers in West Bali. A lot of handshakes between the politicians and Supi and the farmers, and all politicians were super surprised and happy about our product and especially the design.

An important day for us and the cacao farming industry!

CAN CACAO REPLACE YOUR MORNING CUP OF COFFEE?

Have you ever tried to replace your cup of coffee for a cup of cacao? For all of you who are hooked on your morning lattes and afternoon espresso’s will find this an interesting read.

Research shows that cacao is a healthier alternative.  So, if you love the way coffee makes you feel, you will get a similar effect from drinking cacao, but with many more health benefits.

While the caffeine in coffee is intense, strong, fast acting and can be addictive, the theobromine in cacao is gentle, mild, long lasting and non-addictive.

The theobromine in cacao is a mild stimulant that last for longer than caffeine, it gives a softer and longer sustained focus and energy. While caffeine is an alkaloid that works on the nervous system and this can result in a more nervous energy.

Here are some additional benefits to start drinking cacao as a healthy coffee alternative:

CACAO IS RICH IN NUTRIENTS

Cacao contains a large number of minerals with high amounts of iron, copper, manganese, and zinc. Coffee vs Cacao

The energy boost in the morning

CACAO IMPROVES YOUR MOOD WHILE COFFEE TRIGGERS PHYSICAL STRESS RESPONSES

Cacao contains anandamide ((the “bliss” chemical in our bodies), serotonin (the “feel-good” chemical in our brains), and tryptophan (a natural antidepressant amino acid).

Just a small serving of raw cacao triggers the brain to release feel-good endorphins and increases blood flow to the brain. It provides you with naturally occurring mood-enhancing compounds that have been shown to improve focus, mood, and energy.  In contrast to the caffeine in coffee, which increases a neurotransmitter that signals the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

CACAO IMPROVES SLEEP WHILE CAFFEINE CAN CAUSE SLEEP PROBLEMS

Despite being a stimulant, theobromine can actually help you to sleep at night as it helps to balance brain chemistry. While caffeine can make it harder to fall asleep.

How to create an altar

One part of your own home rituals and ceremonies is an altar, a set up space that’s a center space during your spiritual connection.

In this article we show you how you can create your own altar for your home or any place you want to.

WHAT IS AN ALTAR?
An altar is a sacred space to connect with spirit and use for rituals, ceremonies and prayers. It has alway been used in most religions. Usually you find them in shrines, churches, temples and other worshipping places as well as known to use little home altars.

And also shamanic tribes have been using altars to focus on holding space, connect with the spirits and worshipping their ancestors during the ceremonies and rituals.

You find altars everywhere, in entries, in front of buildings, in the middle of buildings, in corners of a room, at beaches, on top of the mountains or even in cars.

WHERE TO SET UP AN ALTAR?
An altar doesn’t need to be big, it can also be just as big as a shoebox. So, don’t worry, if you don’t have the space in your room. You can also find a little table and decorate it with a sarong or piece of fabric.

As long as you have the right intention – should it be more in a quiet area in the corner, close to a window with lots of light and fresh air or in the middle of the room as the center of your rituals and ceremonies?

Find a place that resonates with you and the way you worship, pray and practise your rituals.

BUILD YOUR ALTAR
You may want to use elements that reflect and symbolize the connection with mother earth and your spirit. In the shamanic path we are usually working with the five elements earth, water, fire and air and spirit.

You may want to include all of the five elements onto your altar to include all 5 basic elements. Each element can be symbolized by certain elements from nature or with a spiritual or personal meaning.

Elements of the Earth:

  1. A bowl of soil from your area or a sacred land
  2. Plants or flowers (best is with roots)
  3. White sage
  4. Crystal and stones
  5. Black candle

Earth energy is grounding, connects us with the sacred feminine and represents our mother earth.

Elements of the Water:

  1. Water from a holy place (spring, temple, blessed water)
  2. Sea shells
  3. Blue candle

Water energy is dynamic and flowing. It represents our emotions, intuition, healing and reflection.

Elements of the Air:

  1. Incense stick (smoke represents air)
  2. Smoke of sage, palo santo and other plant material
  3. Feathers (preferred some that you found)
  4. Wind chimes
  5. Bells
  6. Yellow candle

Air energy stands for knowledge and the power of the mind.  It stimulates courage and bravery.

Elements of the Fire:

  1. A symbol that represents the sun or fire
  2. Red candle (and flaming candles in general)

Fire energy is powerful and stands for creative energy, manifestation, inspiration, strong will power and sexual energy.

Elements of the Spirit:

  1. A mirror
  2. Picture of a rainbow
  3. Picture of your guru, spiritual teacher, spirit, god
  4. Picture or symbol of a butterfly
  5. White candle

Spirit energy represents our life force that encompasses and is the creator of all. It can include the spirits of our ancestors and the healing forces which can move the elements of our world and connect between different worlds.

Different tribes have different orders on how to layout the different elements on your altar.

For example:

Native Americans: Earth (north, Water (east), Fire (South) and Wind/Air (West)

Andeans: Fire (east), Earth (South), Water (West), Air (North)

Spirit is always in the center.

It’s up to you how you want to place the elements as long as you do it with your intention.

Now its your turn.

Create your own altar and post your result! We can’t wait to see your beautiful sacred creation.

What is a cacao ceremony

WHAT IS A CACAO CEREMONY

A cacao ceremony is an opportunity for you to connect with yourself, your true essence and with the others around you. With the help of cacao, you will be guided to open your heart and to let go of what no longer serves you.

Cacao ceremonies have been around for thousands of years and are a form of shamanic healing. It’s believed that cacao was used by the Mayans and Aztecs in Central and South America for spiritual, medicinal and ceremonial purposes for inner awakening and creative guidance. For the Mayans and Aztecs, the cacao plant was sacred, giving the plant a Latin name Cocao meaning “Food of the Gods” and was so highly valued that the cacao beans were used as currency.

person holding brown wooden cup with silver spoon

In today’s ceremonies, you will slowly sip cacao, allowing the plant-medicine to open your heart and share of what you want to let go and what you are calling in. The cacao will work gently on your body, mind and heart.

With the help of the cacao you will be able to open your heart completely, releasing and healing the energetic blockages that keep you from living up to your highest potential. The plant-medicine silences the mind and connects to the wisdom and spirit within you. Cacao brings us back to the feeling of love, oneness and connection.

Every cacao ceremony is different, some consist of sitting in circles, sharing and singing. While others let you explore through movement, in combination with yin yoga, or even ecstatic dance.  The most important thing is that the ceremony gives you space to safely connect and to open your heart.

Are you ready to explore the wonderful and healing benefits of cacao yourself?
